For your consideration is this historically significant version of IWC’s Big Pilot watch which comes as a limited edition of only 250 pieces. It was released and sold exclusively in France and Australia for the first three months, and this fact combined with the grey dial has led some in the collecting community to affectionately refer to the watch as the “Koala”.

This watch represents the first time IWC has ever released the Big Pilot in a “right-hander” configuration (i.e. the watch is designed to be worn by left-handed people on the right wrist). In the press release for the watch IWC noted that while only 10% of the general public is left-handed, 40% of pilot’s are left-handed, making the production of a suitable pilot’s watch a pressing necessity. 

It’s worth noting that this watch is definitely not limited to left-handers. We often recommend right-handed collectors buy left-handed versions of watches with large crowns (another example being Panerai’s) as they will actually be more comfortable on the wrist, owing to the fact that the crown won’t dig into the wrist when rotating your hand.

The watch is a classic Big Pilot in every sense – big, bold and solid, but with the iconic pendant style crown shifted positions. 

The slate grey dial with sunburst finish is a standout feature. The dial has a multi-tonal and constantly shifting appearance as it plays with the light rays hitting it. The hour markers and hands are coated with luminous material making the watch a breeze to read in the dark.

The watch is fitted with an IWC black calfskin strap featuring the iconic aviation-inspired rivets. Bringing it all together is an IWC stainless steel folding clasp which helps ensure the watch is safely secured on the wrist.

Powering the watch is the in-house IWC calibre 52010 with hacking seconds, date display, power reserve display and Pellaton automatic winding system. The 7-day power reserve coupled with automatic winding system means this is a watch where you’ll never have to worry about it stopping, even if it’s only a casual wearer. The movement is housed inside a soft-iron case to protect it against magnetic fields.

The watch is in very good condition showing light superficial signs of wear on the case and clasp.

The watch comes as a complete set with box and papers.
