This Oris Aquis is a special edition piece dedicated to the most legendary figure in Chinese mythology, the heroic Monkey King Sun Wukong. As one of the main characters in the 16th century novel Journey to the West, the Monkey King has been one of the popular figures in mythology for centuries and is even worshipped as a genuine spiritual figure in some Buddhist circles. Produced in collaboration with the Shanghai Animation Film Studio Co, the watch draws its inspiration from the studio’s famous 1961 adaption of the story, “The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven”. Released as a limited edition of only 2,000 pieces, it’s a serious, tough watch with a fun, mischievous nature – just like the Monkey King. This particular watch is numbered 747 of 2000. Packed inside Oris’ Aquis divers watch case are many beautiful, carefully-considered touches. The most obvious is the red and yellow seconds-hand on the watch that matches the Golden Cudgel used by Sun Wukong to battle his enemies. A circular radiating pattern on the dial wonderfully depicts the twirl effect created by the Golden Cudgel when spun at high speeds during battle. Without knowing exactly what they represent these design touches make for a captivating viewing experience, made all the more special once you’ve understood the backstory. The ceramic bezel has a slightly different tone of blue, adding to this overall effect. Engraved on the caseback is a picture of Sun Wukong’s face with a cheeky grin. This Oris Aquis Sun Wukong Limited Edition is a very unique and rare timepiece with a lot of charm. For fans of the Monkey King and the Journey to the West story, the watch is a must-have, but even if you’ve never heard of the watch’s backstory the watch has a lot to offer and may serve as a catalyst, opening one’s eyes to one of the most epic and influential stories in all of literature.
