Description
The Rolex Submariner reference 14060 is the poster child for the most recognisable and popular dive watch ever released. It’s got it all – the elements of old and of new, and is a watch that sits on the dividing line between two eras of the iconic Submariner watch. It was the last Submariner released by Rolex that retained the comparatively slender lug and case profile and the last to have one of the best features ever created on a watch: lug holes (because who doesn’t like being able to easily change a strap within seconds without the need for specialist equipment?). In terms of modern features, it is the first non-date Submariner to come with a sapphire crystal and a triplock crown, an obvious improvement for a diving watch. The model is affectionately referred to as a “bridging piece” by collectors. This example is also a Swiss Only” version, meaning it only has the word “Swiss” written on the dial at 6 o’clock as opposed to the far more common “Swiss Made”. When it comes to collecting Rolex, the details matter, and in this case a small detail matters a lot. So-called Swiss Only dials were only produced for less than two years between 1998 and 1999 and featured Rolex’s latest luminous material known as luminor, moving from tritium which it had been using since the early 60’s. When 2000 hit Rolex transitioned to using Super Luminova luminous material (which was only slightly better) and reverted back to writing “Swiss Made” on the dial at 6 o’clock. Accordingly, these Swiss Only dials represent one of the shortest production runs of any particular dial in the company’s history. The watch is in very good condition commensurate with its age showing sharp case contours and signs of light wear visible upon close inspection. There are some slight scratches on the crystal between 10 and 11 o’clock (the crystal could always be replaced if this is a concern). The watch has an 11-link bracelet in worn but very good condition showing only light superficial wear. The watch has recently had a complete mechanical service and is in excellent working condition. Hailwood Peters guarantees the watch for authenticity. Hailwood Peters provides a one-year warranty on the watch.
