Description
This Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight in matte black was first announced at Baselworld 2018 and immediately became one of the most admired and desired watches on the market. The watch’s name, “Fifty-Eight”, references the year when Tudor released its first diver’s watch waterproof to 200 metres. It’s a simple, tough and highly legible timepiece built for everyday wear. It does what it sets out to do, and does so to an extreme level. It offers so much value for money that it almost has no competition in its market segment. If you were a fan of the aesthetics of pre-2010 Rolexes and their anodised aluminium bezels (like us) and not a fan of the new shiny ceramic ones, and you would still like to own something thoroughly modern, this Tudor Black Bay presents an opportunity to own such a watch. Manufactured by Rolex but under a different name, this watch is a more than worthy contender. Looking straight onto the watch one sees almost entirely matte and brushed steel surfaces. When looking at the sides of the watch we see the opposite; almost entirely highly polished steel surfaces. While most watches have a mix of brushed and polished steel surfaces across the watch, we really enjoy this straightforward approach to finishing that reduces the visual noise and soothes the eye. Sized at 39mm, the watch defies the trend towards larger sizes seen on most modern sports watches making it extremely comfortable on wrists of all sizes. The stainless-steel bracelet with solid end-links has a riveted design that is a throwback to watches from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Nowadays it’s rare to see a bracelet with this once ubiquitous design, which helps give the watch a certain charm and killer good looks. The folding clasp has a locking safety catch similar to that found on Rolex Oysterlock clasps. With three points of micro-adjustment on the clasp, the watch and bracelet can be sized to perfectly fit the wrist. The uni-directional rotating matte-black bezel has a 60-minute graduated disc, enabling one to set the bezel with absolute precision. Seriously, we’ve mentioned Rolex a few times already, but it simply must be said: this is a far better system than that found on Rolex bezels. Powering the watch is the in-house Tudor calibre MT5402 featuring automatic winding, hacking seconds and 70-hour power reserve. The watch has been certified as a Swiss Chronometer by independent testing body COSC, ensuring superb timekeeping performance. The watch is in excellent, almost like-new condition. There are only extremely minor signs of wear visible upon close inspection on the clasp. The original case-back and case-side stickers are still on the watch. The watch comes as a complete set with box and papers. The watch has been tested and inspected for performance and is in excellent working condition. Hailwood Peters guarantees the watch for authenticity. The original manufacturer's warranty is valid until August 2025.
