Description

For your consideration is this rare and highly attractive A. Lange & Söhne 1815 UP/DOWN timepiece in white gold. Representing the pinnacle of fine German watchmaking, this watch features all the iconic design elements we’ve come to love from the Glashütte-based brand.

The 1815 is A. Lange & Söhne’s quintessential dress-watch range. It’s a watch that will satisfy even the most stringent purists, with every detail executed to perfection.

The three-part white gold case is a subtle but much welcomed element of the watch, giving it a sort of stealth luxury appearance while providing extra substance when on the wrist. The difference in appearance of white gold compared to steel can only truly be appreciated when seen in person, but suffice it to say that it makes for a very pleasant viewing experience when the watch is experienced close up. The 39mm diameter is a perfect modern dress watch size. At only 8.7mm thick, the watch will comfortably slip under any cuff.

Complimenting the white gold case, the dial is made from pure, solid silver and features a frosted finish on the upper two steps of the dial and a concentric circular guilloche pattern on the power reserve and running seconds sub-dials. The arabic numerals and outer minute track are lacquered onto the dial and provide superb legibility. Set over the dial are Lange’s iconic flame-blued sword-style hands which are faceted and utterly beautiful in the light.

Powering the watch is Lange’s calibre L051.2 with 72-hour power reserve, running small seconds, hacking-seconds, free sprung balance and swan-neck regulator. As with all Lange movements, what is presented in this watch is nothing short of a work of art. The main three-quarter bridge (a trademark of German watchmaking) features a Côtes de Genève stripped finish, while the bridge bevels are hand-finished using the l’anglage technique. The bridges are anodised with a nickel-copper-zinc composite, giving the bridges a golden-hue that we’ve not seen on any other movement bar those from A. Lange & Söhne. The gears are finished with a sunburst-like wavy finish, the screws are black-polished for mirror-like shine and all of the bridge jewels are housed in individual gold chatons with flame-blued screws used to hold them in place. Last, but certainly not least, the watch’s balance bridge features a hand-engraved floral pattern that is totally unique to the watch.

The watch is fitted with a brand-new, unworn A. Lange & Söhne black alligator leather strap just purchased from the boutique in Sydney at a cost of $400. The strap itself is fitted with a matching Lange white gold pin-buckle.

If you’ve been searching for a dress-watch that ticks all the boxes, and one that you, and perhaps the next generation, will cherish for life, one needn’t look any further than this. From a haute horlogerie perspective, it just doesn’t get any better.

Accessories

The watch comes as a complete set with box and papers. The watch was obtained from the original owner who acquired the watch from Watches of Switzerland in Sydney.

The watch is preserved in excellent condition, showing light signs of wear on the case, bezel and buckle but no major scratches for dents.
