Description
This IWC Portugieser Chronograph, reference IW3714-45, is one of IWC’s most iconic and all-time best-selling watches. The IW3714 range was born around 1998 and was continuously manufactured until 2018 with very few changes, an incredibly long production run for any model. IWC simply got it right and it was a fan-favourite from its very inception. The exquisite dial requires close inspection to truly appreciate its many nuances. The silver-plated dial has a very subtle textured gradient appearance and the colour varies between white and eggshell-white depending on the light. When viewed very closely, one notices that the sunken sub-dials for the chronograph minute counter and sub-seconds have a circular radial pattern that contrasts nicely with the rest of the dial. The gold leaf hour, minute and seconds hands and flame-blued chronograph hands are similarly difficult to define exactly, changing appearance drastically depending on the lighting and viewing angle. The convex sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on both sides of the glass ensuring excellent legibility in any situation. At a touch under 41mm, the watch is not large by today’s standards, but with the very thin bezel the dial takes up almost the entire front of the watch, making the watch ‘pop’ on the wrist and wear larger than its actual size. With a thickness of 12.5mm the watch does not feel bulky on the wrist and will comfortably slip under a cuff. The watch is fitted with an unworn IWC dark-brown alligator leather strap with stainless steel deployment folding clasp.
