Description

Kurono is a brand that has taken the watch world by storm in recent years. It was started by renowned Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, who amassed his following by making some of the world’s finest hand-made watches in extremely limited numbers and released under his own name. The watches made under the Hajime Asaoka brand proved to be almost impossible to acquire and of course, have a base price that can’t exactly be called accessible - but you would expect to pay serious money for such high-end pieces.

And so, the Kurono brand was born, providing fans with an opportunity to obtain pieces designed and individually tested and inspected by Hajime Asaoka at a very accessible price point. That was the idea anyway. As with all things in the watch market, when something great pops up it’s bound to attract an insatiable level of demand, and that’s exactly what happen with the Kurono brand. Each release of new Kurono watches has been snapped up almost immediately with examples on the secondary market proving extremely popular.

This Kurono Toki Anniversary timepiece was released to commemorate the second anniversary of the brands founding. It’s a watch that displays the Japanese craftsmen “Shokunin” spirit in every facet of its design. Refined, carefully considered and perfectly proportioned, it’s a dress watch par excellence, and one from which the wearer is sure to derive much joy.

That’s to say nothing of the gorgeous dial, which deserves special mention. Any description we were to write ourselves just wouldn't cut it, so we’ll just quote the <a href="https://kuronotokyo.com/pages/kurono-anniversary-%E6%9C%B1%E9%B7%BA-toki" target="_blank">Kurono website</a> instead: 

<i>“Hajime Asaoka-sensei had a specific aim to create a color that was as unique as possible to Japanese culture, and differentiate itself from the typical 'salmon'-shade dial popular amongst watchmakers in the West. The color of the dial was inspired by the Japanese crested ibis, an auspicious bird with feathers of a shade akin to that of a rising sun, and is regarded as a symbol of happiness and good fortune. Hajime-sensei based the concept of the anniversary watch and the color of the dial off this subtle grace and allure, and aspired to portray this sentiment through his craft. The final color was unpredictable as the shade constantly changes depending on the thickness of the paint and can only be seen after it is physically applied. After myriads of samples and experimentations with different thicknesses and mixes of paint, Hajime-sensei continued to work on fine-tuning the gloss layer as well as other aspects of the watch till it matched his standards. In white light the purplish-coral hues of the dial take centerstage, while in yellow light its golden hues are accentuated making it look less playful and more refined.”</i>

The watch is powered by a high-grade 90S5 Miyota movement made in Japan featuring automatic winding, 42 hour power reserve, hacking function and centre sweep seconds hand.

The watch is in excellent condition, showing very minor signs of wear visible only upon close inspection.

The watch comes as a complete set with box and papers. The set is a sight to behold, beautifully presented and quite unlike anything else on the market. Included is the warranty card, outer cardboard box, outer sleeve, inner box, booklet, microfibre cleaning cloth, Kurono Omamoru and wrapping cloth.

The watch has been inspected and tested for performance and is in excellent working condition. Hailwood Peters guarantees the watch for authenticity.
