Description
For your consideration is this Panerai Radiomir 1936 released in 2006, a 70th anniversary limited edition timepiece based on the original Panerai prototype made for the Italian Royal Navy. Limited to just 1936 pieces worldwide and sold over a two-year period, this “Radiomir” is named after the radioactive luminous material that Panerai patented for use on its divers’ watches. This re-edition, thankfully, does not actually use Radium on the dial markers and blued hands, but rather Luminova, its non-radioactive and much longer lasting modern equivalent. The 47mm case follows the design of the original with a cushion shaped profile and wire lugs. Though large on paper, the 47mm case feels significantly smaller on the wrist owing to this cushion-shaped that neatly perches itself on the wrist without huge protruding lugs and its conservative 15mm thickness. The watch features a “California dial” with a mix of Roman and Arabic numerals and an otherwise unmarked dial free of any branding, which was standard for military issue timepieces from the era. No nonsense, built like a tank and highly legible, exactly what you’d expect of such a watch. The most obvious modern touch is the addition of a sapphire display caseback allowing the owner to view the movement inside beating away at 21,600bph. Powering the watch is hand-wound Panerai calibre OP X with 56 hours power reserve. The OP X is based on the Unitas 6497 movement originally released in the 1950’s, a time-tested, ultra-reliable and easily repairable workhorse movement. The watch is fitted with a custom-made brown leather strap that is in worn but very good condition. The original Panerai leather strap that came with the watch is in brand-new, unworn condition, as it was removed immediately upon the watch being purchased. We can confirm that the watch has one owner provenance and was originally purchased in Sydney. This iconic watch is rare and seldom seen, and we are delighted to be able to offer our clients the chance to own an extremely well-preserved piece of watchmaking history.
Accessories
The watch comes as a complete set with box and papers. Also included with the set is a limited-edition certificate, blue Panerai travel pouch and an additional plexiglass that can be fitted on the watch should the current one ever need to be replaced.
Condition
The watch is in superb condition, with only very minor signs of wear visible upon close inspection.
Warranty
Hailwood Peters provides a one-year warranty on the watch.
