Description
For your consideration is this Rolex Datejust 36 with seldom-seen “chalkboard” silver dial coupled with large numerals in blue. This dial variation has long been discontinued and is rarely seen on the market (especially in this condition), making this an extremely compelling offering for both serious Rolex collectors and those looking for an everyday Datejust timepiece that stands out from the rest. The stainless steel Oyster case features a high polished finish on all of its flanks with a matching smooth polished bezel. When it comes to Rolex, it almost goes without saying that their watches are solidly built and made to take a beating, but the the uniform finish on this example really gives one a sense of the unmatched precision engineering that goes into each Rolex watch case. It may not be large in stature, but this is a serious piece of metal. The stainless steel Oyster bracelet features a straight-grained finish on the link flanks and a high-polished finish down the centre. The folding clasp features what is perhaps Rolex’s most user-friendly clasp system, with the clasp having a spring-loaded tilting head that can be operated with just a single finger to open and close the clasp. The watch also features a “Roulette” date display, where the even numbers are in black and the odd numbers are in red. Interestingly, Rolex has been making these sort of date displays for nearly 80 years without ever commenting specifically on *why* they make the calendar disk like this. Be that as it may, the collecting community has taken to calling it the “Roulette” date with a wide number of theories and personal superstitions built on top of it. It is what you make of it! Powering the watch is the now legendary Rolex 3135, one of the most reliable, widely-used and highly performant movements in history. Able to take a beating and easily repairable if something does go wrong, it’s a workhorse par excellence. The movement features bi-directional automatic winding, 48-hour power reserve, Parachrom hairspring, hacking seconds and quick-set date function. The watch is in excellent condition, showing only extremely minor signs of wear upon close inspection. The watch comes as a complete set with box and papers. The watch has been tested and inspected for performance and is in excellent working condition. Hailwood Peters guarantees the watch for authenticity. Hailwood Peters provides a one-year warranty on the watch.
