Description
This Rolex Explorer “Swiss Only” is perhaps the finest execution of the Explorer model by Rolex since it was released in 1953 owing to the way in which it captures the best of the Explorer from the different eras. When it comes to the Explorer, it’s all in the name. With this watch, Rolex captured the quintessential nature of what an Explorer’s watch should be: tough, reliable, legible and with no nonsense. Just a straightforward watch made for life’s adventures. Unlike many purists, we love the larger 39mm Rolex Explorer’s (which have become very collectable in their own right since being discontinued in 2021), but there’s no denying the Explorer’s classic and most visually appealing size is 36mm. For a watch that’s meant to be a serious tool-watch that flies under the radar, 36mm is just perfect. It’s no wonder Rolex has transitioned back to the 36mm size after almost a decade making it in 39mm, and we don’t foresee them ever going back. In case you haven’t been paying attention: Rolex Explorer’s are the next big thing. The market has swallowed-up all the other Rolex sport models and has recently turned its collective gaze to the Explorer. We’ve seen a rise in price of over 20% for Explorer 1 & 2’s in the last year alone. This watch has a comparatively rare “Swiss Only” dial that was produced for under two years. “Swiss Only” refers to Rolex watches that only have the word “Swiss” written at 6 o’clock as opposed to the vastly more common “Swiss Made”. As well, “Swiss Only” dials were very much transitional, as they represented a short period of time (perhaps the shortest period of time for any specific luminious material) where Rolex transitioned away from using “Tritium” luminous material to “LumiNova”. After just two years of using “LumiNova”, Rolex transition to using “Super LumiNova” which was in use for 8 years before being superseded by “Chromalight”. Powering the watch is the workhorse Rolex Chronometer-Certified automatic calibre 3000. The watch has an “A” serial, indicating it was manufactured in 1999.
