Description
This Rolex GMT-Master II “Pepsi”, reference 16710, is an extremely well-preserved example of one of the most iconic watches ever. What’s perhaps most extraordinary about this watch is how little it has changed from the original GMT-Master released in 1954. Originally developed as a practical tool for pilots who needed to keep track of time across multiple time-zones, the GMT-Master II quickly found a loyal following amongst businessmen and beyond due to its reliability and pure good looks. The watchmakers clearly got the memo, and came up with a perfect fit-for-purpose watch. The watch is in worn but superb preserved condition commensurate with its age (30 years old now!). The glossy black dial and hands are in excellent condition. The tritium luminous plots and matching luminous material on the hands have aged ever so slightly to a beautiful creamy hue, and are one of the only signs that gives away the watch’s age. In our opinion, tritium dials are one of the most attractive things in watchmaking, and we lament the fact that they’re no longer produced. Sure, the new luminous materials last much longer and have a longer lifespan, but they don’t age at all and appear soulless, without any real character. One can tell the watch has been sparsely worn over its life, which is best evidenced by the fact that the original caseback sticker is still in place with the reference number “16710” still discernible. The watch has an “E” serial, indicating it was manufactured in 1990. The bracelet is stamped with a matching “O” date code. The watch has a full-length 12-link Oyster bracelet and folding clasp. The watch was originally sold by the prestigious Rolex dealer J. Farren Price in Sydney on 26th February 1991, giving the watch wonderful and extremely rare Australian provenance.
Accessories
The watch comes with its original papers.
Condition
The case shows sharp prominent bevels, strong lines and a thick and even profile. In our estimation, the watch has only been polished once in its lifetime and was done so to an extremely high standard, preserving all the original contours. The “Pepsi” bezel on the watch is in excellent condition, showing practically no wear at all.
Warranty
Hailwood Peters provides a one-year warranty on the watch.
