Description
For your consideration is this Rolex Yacht-Master II reference 116680. In the history of watchmaking, there have been many watches that were marketed as ”sailing” or ”regatta“ watches, but they were all individually flawed in their own way. On paper they seemed great, but the realities of Yacht racing and all the chaos that occurs in a race start meant that in practice those previous watches would fail their users. That is until now. Rolex takes its time with everything, and with this watch it produced the first mechanical wristwatch that genuinely resolves the issues with those previous regatta timers. Of course it features a programmable countdown timer, but the killer feature is that the watch features a fly-back chronograph hand that allows the wearer to re-sync the watch on the fly with the official countdown timer. While the countdown is running, simply hit the re-set button and the chronograph hand will fly back to the zero position and the countdown hand will fly back to the nearest minute (not to zero!). It’s a masterpiece of engineering produced for a very small niche, but that’s Rolex for you. The brand that wears the crown has a long standing association with all of the world’s top ocean races, so it’s only fitting that they would devote so much technical know-how into resolving this long-standing horological problem. But let’s put the Yacht-racing aspect of this watch aside. This is a big, bold and beautiful timepiece that can be worn and enjoyed even by those that never step foot on a boat, and its functions are most certainly not limited to just regatta timing. Also worth noting is that unlike the Daytona, you don’t need to unscrew the pushers every time you want to use the chronograph on this watch, making it the only current Rolex chronograph watch that can be easily operated on a moments notice. One undeniable aspect of the watch is that you need a large wrist to pull it off, but if you’re a big guy the 44mm case coupled with bold dial and bezel design give this watch unmatched presence on the wrist.
